souderposter0929th Highlights L-29

What a perfect coincidence! Local artist John Souder knew he was going to design something special for the 29th ACD Festival poster when he learned the featured car would be a Cord L-29. He had designed so many of the L-29 themed posters that it was time for something flashy using different colors. Attracting stares was the whole idea behind the Cord L-29 built in Auburn 80 years ago by the Auburn Automobile Company. The 2009 poster features a yellow Cord L-29 with an illustrated background.

“It’s exciting when you see it, because it’s got this yellow car coming right at you, and a road in front of it, and this fiery sunset through the trees behind it,” Souder said of his design.

John browsed through stacks of art magazines looking for inspiration for backgrounds. He liked the desert sunsets, but chose instead to add the woods in the background with the sunset peeking through.

“It’s really flashy and it’ll get people’s attention. When they see it, they’ll have to look at it twice. It feels like it is in motion. This felt as though it was a total piece of art instead of putting pieces together.”

When asked why he does this year after year for the Festival John is quick with his reply: “Volunteerism! If you can do it, why not? The ego trip is great too, but how can I complain?”

John has also donated his time and talents to several other local nonprofit groups, producing posters for events hosted by Noble County Habitat for Humanity and The County Line Church.

John also created  a full-color watercolor illustration as the model for the poster.

This highly sought after collectable will be auctioned off during the annual ACD Kick-Off Luncheon with proceeds benefiting the ACD Festival.

His poster this year will become a lasting keepsake for many fans of collector cars. John’s posters grace many garages, museums, and public spaces worldwide.

John stated in 1999 “It’s important to do something you like, to be happy and to be what you want to be and that’s why I’ll do the poster until they say they want somebody else.”

Ten years and ten posters later, the Festival doesn’t want “somebody else!” The ACD Festival and directors sincerely appreciate John’s time, talent and efforts and thank John for his 29 years of contributions to the ACD Festival. We are honored to have John as a Festival friend.
